I’m enjoying reading everyone’s resolutions and have been thinking about my own, both personal and sewing related, for 2015. I tend to set the same general ones each year; cook more, read more, and although I don’t fully achieve them I’m happy for then to be ongoing ambitions. Lots of parts of 2014 made me happy, so after much reflection I have resolved to do more of everything! Cooking, reading, sewing, blogging, walking, Instagram-ing….
As I’m only a few months into my adventures in sewing and dressmaking, I’ve also pondered what stitching-specific resolutions to set, so here goes:
1) To increase the range of patterns, fabrics and techniques I use and am comfortable with (pretty all-encompassing, I know)
2) To create more homemade gifts and to sew for other people. This partly links to another resolution, to be more organised, in order to give me adequate time to make items for both myself and others, as well as enabling me to source the required notions and fabrics in good time.
3) To improve my finishes. Most of my makes definitely could NOT be worn inside out. I like French seams and pinking but that’s about it so far. Would an overlocker change my life?
4) To increase my blogging network. I have already ‘met’ some lovely fellow sewists with whom I exchange comments, but I would like to expand this further. Lisa’s #sewingsanta was a brilliant end to the year and I would love to be involved in similar projects.
5) Sew more, blog more. Nuff said.
Surely in these New Year things it should mention work harder?? 😉👍👍

In short, yes, an overlocker would soon become an indispensible piece of equipment! If you sew knits then it’s the only way to get a professional finish, but makes sewing any seam a quick and tidy task. I’ve had mine for over twenty years now and wouldn’t be without it! Good luck with your goals for this year:)

Thank you, that’s really useful to know. My birthday is this month so I am trying to think about what would be useful, e.g. a taylor’s dummy which I have now disregarded as not essential (but nice for photos). Happy new year 🙂

I’m off on an over locker introduction course a week tomorrow. Ashamed to admit I’ve had mine a while, but I’m just too scared to even try it! Hoping the course will give me the confidence boost I need! I’ll let you know…

Ooh that sounds fab, let me know how it goes! I am semi-scared of them too so a course would be great 🙂

“sew more, blog more” – haha, that’s a great resolution! To improve your finishes is a good one – I look forward to seeing all your makes inside out at the end of the year!! 🙂

These are good resolutions and I am looking forward to reading all about them! 🙂 I will be EXTREMELY jealous if you get a dummy or an overlocker :-0 You should definitely move over here so we can share!!

I’ve pretty much decided against a dummy but not sure about an overlocker yet – will keep you posted! 🙂
