Although I enjoyed making my past two shirt dresses, I headed in a slightly different direction for my D Dress – towards a new Indie Pattern by The Avid Seamstress: the Day Dress. I bought this pattern after coming across a blog post by What Katie Sews. I used some denim-look cotton from Fabworks for £5 per metre, and only used about half of the 4m I had purchased as it was 60″ width.

I enjoyed this make, and found the instructions and photos easy to follow. There were a couple of methods, such as using elastic to gather the skirt, and the one-step sleeve insertion, that were a bit different from my previous makes, which again I quite liked. I included pockets but made no other alterations. The invisible zip went in nicely and the facings worked well. A pleasant make, and a staple wardrobe item that I have already had a fair bit of wear from.

I do wish it was an inch or two longer, and have lengthened it on subsequent versions – cue my E and F dresses. Other than that, it’s lovely to wear and again, nice for school or for weekends and evenings. It’s also a perfect style for spring weather as can easily be layered, or not, depending on the weather.
